Do You Read Your Bible?
We believe that the Bible is the word of God and we’d like to know it better, but well, we’re busy and a lot of the stories, especially in the Old Testament, don’t seem to be particularly relevant to today’s modern world.
Or are they?
Did you know that the Catholic Church strongly urges all Catholics “to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures?” The Catechism of the Catholic Church goes on to say that “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” and, quoting Psalm 119, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Remember, Jesus Himself often quoted from Scripture and saw in it both truth and wisdom. In fact, in John 8:31, Jesus said to “those Jews who believed in him, ‘If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ “
We can all become students of Scripture, and there is no better way to start than right here, and right now. It’s pretty hard to "remain" in Christ’s word without regularly spending time in reading and reflection.
