Sponsors

Each candidate for Confirmation must choose a sponsor. It is desirable that the Godparent at Baptism be the sponsor at Confirmation to better express the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation. Parents cannot function in the role of sponsor.

The sponsor should be sufficiently mature for this role, belong to the Catholic Church, and have been initiated in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The sponsor should be an active member of their church community.

The sponsor should live close enough to participate in the preparation of the candidate for Confirmation and be able to continue to support the faith of the candidate.

Guidelines

  • Pray daily for your candidate
  • Be a living role model of faith
  • Encourage your candidate by growing in a faith relationship
  • Give your time and share your gifts by helping her/him prepare for Confirmation
  • Support her/him in their commitment to a Christian Life
  • Be present in their lives
  • Collect letters
  • Help and/or do service projects with your candidate
