Confirmation Sponsors

Each candidate must choose a sponsor. It is desirable that the Godparent at Baptism be the sponsor at Confirmation to better express the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation. Parents cannot function in the role of sponsor for their own child.

The sponsor should be sufficiently mature for this role, at least 16 years of age, belong to the Catholic Church, and have been initiated in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The sponsor should be an active member of their church community.

The sponsor should live close enough to participate in the preparation of the candidate for Confirmation and be able to continue to support the faith of the candidate.

What is a SPONSOR?

  1. A sponsor is an adult member of the Catholic Church who is a prayer companion for the Confirmation Candidate.
  2. A Sponsor is a person who supports, encourages, and guides the Candidate as he/she strives to deepen his/her relationship with God and the Church.
  3. A Sponsor is the personal representative of the parish who will be witness to the readiness of the Candidate to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  4. A Sponsor is a person who will encourage the newly Confirmed to fulfill his/her responsibilities as a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church.

Who may be a SPONSOR?

  1. A Sponsor must be practicing member of the Church and a good Christian role model for the Confirmation Candidate.
  2. A Sponsor should be a person with whom the Candidate for Confirmation can develop a close relationship. (A person who lives a long distance from the Candidate may not be a good choice for a Sponsor.)
  3. A Sponsor should be a person who is willing to share his/her faith with the Candidate.
  4. A Sponsor should be at least 16 years of age.

In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit.
